About
Japanese influences and the natural world, are the inspiration behind the debut collection of luxury hand knotted rugs from Louise Carrier.
Every skein of wool is dyed by hand and every knot in our rugs is tied by hand by master craftspersons, so you can be assured of a truly luxurious product that will last for years to come. The Sumi 墨 Collection represents a dialogue between the weavers skill and Louise’s original hand painted designs.
Louise Carrier, is a graphic designer and lecturer from South Staffordshire. A thought provoking childhood spent in her idyllic garden formed the basis for Louise’s deep passion for nature and the outdoors. Growing and making things continues to play a prevalent part in her life and remains a key influence among her design inspirations.
“I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese culture; by the impactive nature of the design – the elegant and generous use of space and sensitivity to detail. When I moved to London I regularly frequented Falkiners Fine Papers to muse over their Japanese papers – I still have some Chiyogami now that I can’t bear to cut, it’s simply too beautiful!”
The Sumi 墨 Collection seeks to continue the long established tradition in rug design of utilising symbolic motifs. A contemporary take on this practice, Louise has included non-figurative motifs throughout the collection which aim to impart something of the beauty and essence of the natural phenomena that inspired it into the interior. Exclusive to Rug Couture, it is entirely unique.
