Introducing Sumi 墨

Mountain – Yama 山

Mount Fuji 富 士 山 stands majestic on Japan’s Honshu Island. The process of Suminagashi 墨 流 し or “floating ink” was explored to create the Mountain 山 rug, a homage to Fuji-san. In this process ink and water were used to repeatedly marble rice paper until the desired contour-like drawing emerged. The use of this technique adds a textural quality within the design to create subtle interest within its neutral colourways.   

River – Kawa 川

Warm summer afternoons where the sun plays on the water’s surface like a melody inspired the River 川 rug. Where Sea 海 is expansive like the horizon, River 川 places more emphasis on the vertical, evoking the river’s current. The abstract motif almost recording the play of light as a form of notation. It is available in three classic shades of blue for lovers of denim, like the designer.

Stream – Sutorīmu ストリーム

The relaxing sound of flowing water as it trickles over still rocks. Stream ストリーム plays with contrasts; contrasting elements in the motif extending the language of Sea 海 and River 川, contrasting colours in the Sumi and Indigo Blush colourways and changes of lustre in the Sunset Blush and Graphite designs.

Trees – Ki 木

There is something truly magical in a misty forest. Trees 木 invites you to walk into and onto this. Brushstrokes were selected for their individual character giving rise to a slightly irregular stripe. The Sumi colourway has a rather glamorous quality akin to a zebra stipe where Slate is both elegant and neutral. The green hues of Misty Forest and Foliage are natural and yet on-trend.
